Does a water softener need servicing/maintenance?

The water softeners we supply do not need regular servicing or maintenance. Just add salt!

Do I need to put salt in my water softener?

Yes. All the water softeners we supply run on salt (block, tablet or granular).

Which salt is best?

We supply block, tablet and granular salt all of which do the job of softening your water through your water softener. Most conventional style units take tablet or granular salt whereas the new, non-electric models take block. (Block salt is lighter and easier to load!).

Can I use table salt in a water softener?

No. It’s important that you only use the salts recommended for your water softener, in the form that your water softener requires. Some water softeners take block salt while others require you to pour the salt into the softener.

Do water softeners need an electrical supply?

Some water softeners do need an electrical supply. These tend to be the conventional, single cylinder models. The electrical cost of running these water softeners is only approx. £1 per year.

Can I have a water softener in a flat?

This all depends on the plumbing set up in your flat. A free of charge site survey can determine whether a water softener is suitable for your flat.

What are the running costs of a water softener?

What is the warranty on a water softener?

Warranty varies depending on the product. Each individual water softener warranty is shown on our water softener pages.

How long does a water softener last?

We pride ourselves in dealing with reliable manufactures and products. A water softener can give you good quality softened water for up to 20 years.

Can I drink softened water?

Yes. Soft water is perfectly safe to drink and is even considered wholesome!

How much sodium is in softened water?

A glass of softened water contains 25mg of sodium. Let’s compare this to items in your daily diet:

  • A glass of milk contains 98mg of sodium
  • A slice of white bread contains 350mg
  • And a serving of cheddar cheese contains 820mg of sodium!

This shows that in comparison to items you would drink/eat freely, without worrying about the sodium content, softened water is pretty safe and healthy to drink!

What does softened water taste like?

Everyone’s taste buds are different but some people may describe it is as a ‘flat’ taste. A bit like boiled water left to go cold.

Can I have a water softener and a water filter?

Yes. A water softener and a water filter are two totally different products. A water softener softens all water used in a home whereas a water filter is used for drinking water usually just at a kitchen tap.

Can a water softener help eczema/psoriasis?

Yes. Softened water is proven to help and in some cases even alleviate skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. In 2010 we carried out a study with Chase Farm Hospital in Enfield, North London where in which we installed aprox. 200 water softeners in patients’ homes who had severe skin conditions. Out of aprox. 200 patients only two opted to have their water softener removed; the others were amazed at the results. Check out our ‘Why install a water softener?’ page where you can find out more about the benefits of softened water and hear one eczema suffers amazing story.

Can I take my water softener with me when I move house?

Yes. It’s as easy to remove as a washing machine or dishwasher, and you can take it with you when you move house. However, it may be a good idea to mention your water softener as part of the sale as another feature of your home.

Will my existing lime scale/water marks disappear?

Yes. Installing a water softener will prevent limescale and water marks from building up and will eventually help to break down your existing limescale and marks (time scale will vary depending on severity of existing build up).

Why do we get limescale/water marks?

The dissolved calcium which is rock in hard water dries on the surface leaving you with limescale build and hard water marks.

What is hard water?

Water that contains calcium and magnesium. Rain water is naturally soft but when it comes into contact with chalk and limestone in becomes contaminated with calcium and magnesium causing the water to become hard.

Am I in a hard water area?

You can find out whether you are in a hard water area and the severity of the hard water by using our Hard water map on our ‘Why install a water softener page?’

Where do I get water softener salt from?
